Sleep Disorder Lab
Sleep is essential. More than just a break from daily life, sleep is an active state vital to the restoration of the body and mind. A lack of sleep can result in irritability, poor concentration, depression and lost productivity. Sleepless nights can also contribute to motor vehicle accidents and workplace mishaps.
Millions of Americans are affected by sleep disorders, like sleep apnea, insomnia and chronic snoring, that prevent them from getting a good night's sleep. Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County can help diagnose these conditions in adults and restore restful sleep.
Sleep disorders are diagnosed through sleep studies conducted in the sleep lab, usually overnight. The lab has a bedroom and a control room where technicians monitor patients throughout the study. A physician referral is required before a sleep study is conducted.
The bedroom in the sleep lab is designed to be comfortable and home-like so that patients can sleep normally during the study. Patients are encouraged to wear their own comfortable pajamas and may bring their own pillow if they wish.
During the study, patients are monitored continually by a polysomnographic technician and/or a certified or registered respiratory therapist who will use microphones, infrared cameras, and electrodes to record all aspects of sleep. Brain and muscle activity, eye movements, breathing, and heart rate are monitored simultaneously to create an accurate representation of the patient's sleep patterns. The equipment used is designed to be as unobtrusive as possible and does not restrict movement or repositioning during the night. Talk to you doctor if you suspect you are suffering from a sleep disorder.
